What do you get with a standard porta potty?
A standard porta potty is a single-user, non-flushing toilet with a 60-gallon holding tank, a urinal, roof vents and a latch that shows when it is occupied. Our reference model, the PolyJohn PJN3, stands 91 inches tall, 43.5 inches wide and 47 inches deep. Killeen contractors rent it more than any other unit.

Will it fit in my yard or through my gate?
A standard porta potty fits through any gate or path at least 4 feet wide, since the unit is 43.5 inches across and the crew needs a little room on each side. It needs 8 feet of headroom. If the gate is narrower, the unit can sit on the driveway or beside the garage instead.
Many newer Killeen subdivisions, such as Victory Ranch and Turnbo Ranch, have front-entry garages and fenced backyards with 4-foot gates. A driveway spot beside the garage is usually the easiest place for a remodel unit.
How many workers can share one unit?
One standard porta potty comfortably serves up to 10 workers on a 40-hour week with one weekly cleaning, based on its 60-gallon tank. OSHA allows 1 unit for up to 20 workers, but larger crews fill the tank before service day. Above 10 workers, add a second unit or a second weekly visit.
| Crew size | OSHA floor (29 CFR 1926.51, Table D-1) | Worked example |
|---|---|---|
| 1–20 workers | 1 toilet | A 5-person framing crew in Killeen: 1 unit |
| 21–199 workers | 1 seat plus 1 urinal for every 40 workers | 120 workers ÷ 40 = 3 units |
| 200 or more | 1 seat plus 1 urinal for every 50 workers | 230 workers ÷ 50 = 4.6, so 5 units |
Where does a standard unit work best?
A standard porta potty works best on construction sites, home remodels, roofing and fencing jobs, ranch work and long rentals where cost matters most. It is a poor fit for weddings and dressy parties, where guests expect a flush and a sink; book a flushing unit for those.
