How many accessible units does an event need?
An event needs at least 5% of the portable units in each group to be accessible, with a minimum of 1, under section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards. A group of up to 20 units needs 1 accessible unit; a group of 21 to 40 needs 2. Your venue or permit office has the final word.
The U.S. Access Board guide states: "Where portable single user toilet units are provided, including at temporary events, access is required to at least 5% in each cluster" (Access Board guide; standards at ADA.gov). An accessible unit also needs an accessible route, and the standards describe turning space as a 60-inch diameter circle or a T-shaped space.
Harker Heights writes this into its event code: the city can require "sanitary facilities (including disabled-accessible sanitary facilities) such as portable toilets and hand-washing stations" (Harker Heights Code §100.08). See our Harker Heights page.
Where should the accessible unit sit?
Set a wheelchair-accessible unit on firm, level ground such as concrete, asphalt or packed caliche, on a clear path at least 36 inches wide from parking and seating. Leave about 5 feet clear in front of the door. Keep it off soft turf after rain and away from curbs and slopes.
This is planning advice, not legal advice. Your venue, permit office or ADA coordinator decides what your event must provide. For the full rule, read ADA rules for portable toilets at Texas events.

Wheelchair-Accessible Porta Potty questions
Can I call your accessible unit ADA-compliant?
Use 'wheelchair-accessible.' Whether a setup meets the ADA depends on the route and placement, not just the unit. Confirm with your venue or permit office.
How wide is the door?
The reference model's door frame is 32 inches wide and 74 inches tall.
Can other guests use it?
Yes. Parents with small children and older guests often choose it for the extra room.
Will it fit through my backyard gate?
It is 62 inches wide, so it needs a gate of about 5.5 feet. Most go on the driveway.
